Local 3-Pack

Quick Definition

The Local 3-Pack (often just 'Map Pack') is the boxed group of three local business listings Google shows above organic results for queries with local intent — historically a 7-pack, narrowed to 3 around 2015.

In context

The 3-Pack captures the lion's share of clicks for any query with local intent — typically 40–50% of total click volume in the SERP. Ranking factors are the standard local trio: Relevance (categories, services, content match to query), Distance (proximity to searcher), Prominence (review count and quality, citations, brand authority). Optimisation focuses on GBP completeness, review velocity, and a strong locally-relevant website. Outside the 3-Pack, listings appear in 'View all' (the Local Finder) — still valuable but materially less click volume.

Example

A Toronto plumbing company that moved from 4th to 3rd in the Map Pack saw call volume from organic-local roughly double — the click-through gap between #3 and #4 is the largest in the Map Pack.
