Server-Side GTM

Quick Definition

Server-side Google Tag Manager runs the GTM container on a Google Cloud Run instance you control, processing analytics and ad-platform events server-side instead of in the browser.

In context

Server-side GTM gives you control over what data flows to which third party, restores measurement accuracy lost to browser restrictions, hides client-IP and PII from third parties when desired, and centralises analytics infrastructure. Setup cost: a few hours of GCP configuration plus monthly hosting cost (typically C$30–C$200/mo for medium-traffic sites). The benefit is most material for sites with significant ad spend or strict privacy requirements.

Example

A Toronto B2B SaaS migrated its main events to server-side GTM, restoring ~25% of conversion signal lost to browser tracking restrictions and improving Google Ads' optimisation accuracy.
