GBP Secondary Categories
Secondary categories on Google Business Profile are additional category labels (up to 9) beyond the single primary category, used to expand the queries the profile can rank for.
In context
Primary category is the dominant ranking signal (and should match the main service); secondary categories expand reach into adjacent queries. Best practice: choose secondary categories for services you genuinely offer and want leads for; do not pad with unrelated categories — Google can penalise category abuse. Category research: look at what ranks for your target queries in the Map Pack and reverse-engineer their categories using a tool like GMB Everywhere or Pleper.
A Toronto dental practice's primary category is 'Dentist'; secondary categories include 'Cosmetic dentist', 'Pediatric dentist', and 'Emergency dental service' — each expanding the query set the listing surfaces for.
