Custom Event (GA4)

Quick Definition

A custom event in GA4 is an event you define and trigger via gtag(), GTM, or the Measurement Protocol — beyond GA4's default events (page_view, scroll, click, etc.).

In context

Custom events are the foundation of meaningful conversion tracking and behavioural segmentation. Common custom events for Canadian SEO programs: lead_form_submit (with form source), demo_booked (with plan tier), download_lead_magnet (with magnet ID), newsletter_signup (with source). Event parameters (max 25 per event) carry the contextual data; configure them as custom dimensions to use in reports.

Example

A Toronto B2B SaaS triggers a 'demo_booked' custom event with parameters {plan_tier, source_channel, content_cluster} — enabling granular reporting on which content clusters drive which plan tiers.
