North Star Metric

Quick Definition

A North Star Metric is the single metric a company chooses as its primary indicator of customer-value delivery — used to align all teams around a shared goal.

In context

Common North Star choices: Slack uses messages sent within active teams; Airbnb uses nights booked; Spotify uses time spent listening. For SEO, the North Star is rarely a pure SEO metric — it's typically the downstream business outcome SEO contributes to (qualified leads, revenue, MAU). Picking the right North Star aligns the SEO team with the business; picking the wrong one (e.g., 'organic sessions') optimises SEO for vanity volume at the cost of business outcome.

Example

A Canadian B2B SaaS chose 'qualified demos booked from organic' as its SEO North Star — driving content investment toward conversion-stage rather than top-of-funnel volume.
