Keyword Cannibalization
Keyword cannibalization happens when two or more pages on the same site target the same query, splitting ranking signals between them and weakening overall performance.
In context
Cannibalisation is one of the most common, most damaging on-page issues on content-heavy sites. Diagnosis: in Search Console, find queries where the top-ranking URL flips between two pages over time, or where two pages each rank in positions 6–10 instead of one ranking in positions 1–3. Resolution options: consolidate (301 the weaker page to the stronger), differentiate (rewrite each page to target a meaningfully distinct query), or canonicalise (if the pages must coexist for UX reasons). Cannibalisation audits are quarterly hygiene work on any site over 1000 pages.
A Canadian B2B SaaS had three blog posts targeting 'how to choose an SEO agency'; consolidating into one comprehensive page (301-redirecting the other two) lifted the page from #8 to #3 within 60 days.
