Navigational Query (deeper)

Quick Definition

A navigational query is a search where the user already knows the destination they want — 'gmail login', 'cra my account', 'toronto seo contact' — and is using search as a navigation aid.

In context

Navigational queries have near-100% click-through to the intended destination — if you own the brand, you should always rank #1 for navigational queries containing your brand name. Failing to rank for your own navigational queries is a serious problem (often caused by NAP inconsistency, hreflang issues, or competitor brand-bidding). Beyond brand, navigational queries are not an organic acquisition surface — there's no acquisition opportunity for 'gmail login' if you're not Gmail.

Example

Toronto SEO ranks #1 on every variation of its branded navigational queries — owning the brand SERP fully so prospects always land on the canonical site.
