3xx Redirection
RFC 9110
307 Temporary Redirect
Like 302 but the request method must not change when following the redirect.
What it means
HTTP 307 Temporary Redirect indicates a temporary move where the client must use the exact same HTTP method (POST stays POST) and body when following the redirect.
When it's used
Temporary redirects of non-GET requests, especially POST, where method preservation matters.
Common causes
- POST API endpoint temporarily moved to maintenance handler
- PUT request rerouted to a backup server
- Method-preserving redirect needed (302 historically did not guarantee this)
How to fix it
- Use when method preservation matters and the move is temporary
- Use 308 if the move is permanent
- Use 301/302 for typical GET-only redirects
Example response
HTTP/1.1 307 Temporary Redirect Location: /api/v2/users
SEO impact
Treated as temporary by Google. Original URL retains indexing priority.
