RFC 9110

308 Permanent Redirect

Like 301 but the request method must not change when following the redirect.

What it means

HTTP 308 Permanent Redirect indicates a permanent move where the client must use the same HTTP method and body. Unlike 301, which historically allowed clients to change POST to GET, 308 strictly preserves the method.

When it's used

Permanent migration of API endpoints, especially for POST/PUT/DELETE, where method must be preserved.

Common causes
  • API endpoint permanently moved (POST /v1/users → POST /v2/users)
  • Strict method preservation required
  • Modern REST API versioning
How to fix it
  • Correct for permanent API moves
  • Use 301 for typical web page redirects (better legacy support)
  • Update API clients to point to the new URL directly
Example response
HTTP/1.1 308 Permanent Redirect
Location: /api/v2/users
SEO impact

Passes link equity like 301. Safe for SEO when needed for API or method-sensitive endpoints.
