3xx Redirection
RFC 9110
302 Found
The resource is temporarily located at a different URL.
What it means
HTTP 302 Found indicates that the resource is temporarily located at a different URI. The client should continue to use the original URI for future requests because the move is not permanent.
When it's used
A/B testing, geographic redirects, temporary maintenance pages, login-required redirects.
Common causes
- User redirected to login page
- Temporary marketing campaign URL
- Geo-IP redirect to country-specific site
- A/B test variant
How to fix it
- Use 301 instead if the move is permanent
- Use 307 if you must preserve the original HTTP method
- Audit 302s — most should actually be 301s
Example response
HTTP/1.1 302 Found Location: /login?return=/dashboard
SEO impact
Does NOT pass full link equity. Google may still index the original URL. Use sparingly and only for truly temporary redirects.
