3xx Redirection
RFC 9110
303 See Other
The response can be found under another URI using a GET method.
What it means
HTTP 303 See Other tells the client to retrieve the requested resource from a different URI using a GET request. Most commonly used after a POST to prevent form re-submission on refresh.
When it's used
Post/Redirect/Get pattern after form submission, where the client should follow up with a GET to a confirmation page.
Common causes
- After POST form submission, redirecting to a thank-you page
- After PUT/DELETE, redirecting to a status page
- Implementing the PRG pattern to prevent duplicate submissions
How to fix it
- Correct usage of the PRG pattern — keep as is
- Ensure the Location URL returns 200 OK
- Do not use 303 for permanent moves — use 301
Example response
HTTP/1.1 303 See Other Location: /orders/12345/confirmation
