Content Silo

Quick Definition

A content silo is a structured grouping of related content pages tightly internally linked around a topic — designed to demonstrate topical authority and concentrate ranking signals within the topic.

In context

Silos are the architectural cousin of topic clusters: a pillar page sits at the top, supporting pages link tightly to the pillar and to each other within the silo, and external links from elsewhere on the site point primarily to the pillar. Strict silos avoid cross-silo internal links to keep PageRank concentrated; modern practice is more permissive — link across silos when contextually relevant, but keep the dominant link flow within silo. Silos help Google identify which entity each page belongs to.

Example

A Toronto agency built a 'Local SEO' silo with one pillar page and 14 supporting articles all internally linked — Google began ranking the pillar for the head term within 4 months and the supporting pages for related long-tail queries.
