Google removed special treatment for AMP pages in 2021, ending the requirement to use AMP for Top Stories or Google News carousel inclusion.

In context

Sites still running AMP can either continue (no penalty) or sunset it in favour of standard responsive design. Most publishers have migrated away from AMP since the requirement ended.
