Indexation

Quick Definition

Indexation is the state of a page being included in Google's (or another engine's) searchable index — distinct from being crawled, which only means the page was fetched.

In context

A page can be crawled but not indexed if Google decides it's low quality, duplicative, or noindexed. Indexation status is checked per-URL in Google Search Console (URL Inspection). Common indexation problems on Canadian sites: noindex tags accidentally left on production pages, canonical tags pointing to a different URL, soft-404 status from thin content, and 'crawled — currently not indexed' which usually signals a quality or duplication issue. The Indexing API exists but is officially limited to JobPosting and BroadcastEvent schema only.

Example

A new Toronto neighbourhood landing page is fetched by Googlebot the day it ships but takes 3 weeks to be indexed because Google's quality systems delay indexation until the page accumulates internal links and engagement signals.
