SEO IRL 2026.Why we left disappointed.

The event was well organized. But we came for practical SEO lessons backed by results, and too many of the sessions we heard did not deliver what we expected.

By Martin Vassilev, co-owner of TorontoSEO.com, who attended with business partner Khalid Mohamed.

· Updated to acknowledge the completed ticket refunds.

Refund correction — October 9, 2026: Both tickets were refunded in full on October 7. Our earlier statement that no refund had been received was incorrect. The ticket refund is complete; separate requests for other expenses and compensation for time spent remain unresolved.

Why we attended

My business partner Khalid Mohamed and I travelled from Ottawa for SEO IRL at MaRS Discovery District in Toronto on October 6–7, 2026. We bought tickets, arranged accommodation, and took two days away from our businesses.

We wanted lessons we could use: what someone changed on a website, how they did it, and what happened afterward. That included SEO and visibility in AI search.

The event was well organized, and we told the organizer that. Our disappointment concerned the educational substance and the response to our feedback.

Networking can be a good reason to attend a conference. Meeting peers and exchanging ideas has value, and someone attending mainly for that may judge the event differently. Our concern is narrower: we also expected the advertised practical education to stand on its own.

What the marketing led us to expect

The event website used these phrases. The screenshots below preserve the wording:

“real-world results”

“have the receipts”

“straight-up SEO strategies & tactics from the frontlines”

Event website — wording may change.

For us, that meant expecting:

  1. E1Specific tactics and implementation steps.
  2. E2Rankings, traffic, or conversion outcomes over a defined period.
  3. E3An explanation of what changed and why.
  4. E4Limitations and other factors affecting the results.

That gap is why I felt misled. I expected examples supported by results, not just recommendations. I am describing my reaction—not claiming to know anyone’s intent.

Where it fell short for us

Red outline: no concrete case study, as I recall it. Solid: the other speakers we heard. Twelve speakers we heard, not the full roster.

10 / 12

speakers we heard

Based on my recollection, 10 of the 12 speakers we heard did not present concrete case studies connecting their recommendations to measurable results.

Twelve is the number of speakers we heard, not the full advertised roster. It also does not mean that no speaker used evidence.

Too much of what we heard felt broad or promotional. I wanted to leave knowing how to apply a method and why I should expect it to work.

That does not require naming clients or sharing confidential information. An anonymized example can explain the starting point, the work, the results, and what remains uncertain.

We came to understand what worked, how it was implemented, and what evidence supported it.

Other attendees may have had different experiences. Some may have heard different sessions, valued different material, or judged the same talks differently.

What happened when we raised our concerns

This is my recollection of a conversation with Steve Toth. I am paraphrasing what happened, not quoting his exact words.

  1. Moment 1

We introduced ourselves and complimented the event's organization.

  2. Moment 2

We then raised the gap between the practical education we expected and what we felt the presentations delivered.

  3. Moment 3

The discussion shifted to the organizer's use of email marketing.

  4. Moment 4

That did not answer our question.

  5. Moment 5

He then walked away, leaving our concern unresolved.

I found that dismissive and deeply disappointing. We wanted a substantive discussion about the concerns we raised.

How I judge a case study

This is the standard I brought into the room. It is a checklist, not a score, and it is not applied to any named speaker here.

  1. Method

What was actually done, in enough detail to repeat.

  2. Baseline

Where things stood before the change.

  3. Change

What moved: rankings, traffic, citations or conversions.

  4. Period

    Over what defined time window.

  5. Outcome

The measurable result, anonymized if needed.

  6. Limitations

Seasonality, algorithm updates, other work and what did not work.

Third-party traffic estimates, with limits

I looked up several domains in Semrush. These are domains associated with people at the event, used here purely as labels. They do not cover all speakers, the sample was hand-selected, and nothing below ranks anyone.

I include these only because the marketing emphasized results. They are context for my own curiosity, not proof of anything about any person.

The seonotebook.com screenshot uses the Canada database and shows a report date of October 6, 2026 (estimated organic traffic 1, keywords 55, authority score 17). It is a different database and date, so it is shown separately and not pooled with the worldwide figures.

What these numbers cannot tell you

  • Semrush figures are modelled estimates of organic search traffic, not total visits, leads, revenue or first-party analytics.
  • An estimate of 0 does not mean a site receives no actual traffic.
  • n/a means the tool had no figure. It is not zero.
  • Traffic to a personal or company domain does not establish client results, client portfolio or competence.
  • Each value is a single point in time. No trend or history is implied.
  • The sample is hand-selected and covers 8 domains, not every speaker.
  • These numbers cannot substantiate deception, and I am not presenting them that way.

Ticket refunds completed. Other requests remain.

Both conference tickets have been refunded in full. We acknowledge that completed refund; we are not requesting the ticket money again.

Status as of October 9, 2026

Steve Toth confirmed that both tickets were refunded in full on October 7, 2026 at 7:12 PM, with confirmation sent at 7:13 PM. I acknowledge the ticket refunds. Our earlier statement that no refund had been received was incorrect.

The refund covered admission only, not other event-related expenses or compensation for time spent attending. As of October 9, 2026, we are separately requesting those additional reimbursements and compensation; they have not been received. These are remaining requests, not approved reimbursements or an established legal entitlement.

In our opinion, the time spent attending did not deliver the practical learning we expected. That is our assessment of the sessions we heard, not a claim that every attendee found the event useless. The ticket refund does not change that assessment, but it does resolve the ticket-refund request.

A draft you can adapt

If you attended and have your own unresolved concern, here is a neutral starting point. Acknowledge any refund already received and request only what remains outstanding. Replace every bracket with your own experience. Nothing is sent automatically.
