Shopify SEO Canada
SEO that respects Shopify's architecture and weaponizes its strengths.
Canadian Shopify and Shopify Plus merchants who want to outrank pure-play DTC competitors and stop bleeding traffic to platform-default URL patterns.
Shopify powers an estimated 28% of Canadian ecommerce stores in 2026, and the share is higher (43%) among Canadian DTC brands launched after 2020. The platform's Toronto-area merchant footprint is dense — roughly 14,000 active stores in the GTA alone — which means SERPs for product-category queries in Canadian markets are increasingly Shopify-vs-Shopify.
Why Shopify SEO is its own discipline
Shopify SEO in 2026 is fundamentally different from generic ecommerce SEO. The platform constrains URL patterns (`/products/`, `/collections/`, `/blogs/`), forces a specific Liquid templating model, blocks server-side log access on plans below Plus, and ships with a default sitemap and robots.txt that you cannot directly edit on non-Plus plans. Win on Shopify by working *with* the architecture rather than fighting it: collection-page SEO is the dominant lever (collections rank for category-level queries; product pages rank for long-tail), JSON-LD via theme injection is the cleanest schema route, and the platform's metafields system is the single best on-page authority signal most merchants ignore. We've been shipping Shopify SEO since 2017 and run a Shopify Plus partner relationship out of our Toronto office.
Shopify is not WordPress. You cannot install arbitrary server-side code, you cannot edit the .htaccess equivalent, you cannot directly customize the URL structure for products or collections (only the prefix slug), and you cannot natively block low-value parameter URLs from being crawled. The platform makes some SEO decisions for you and unmakes others; an effective Shopify SEO engagement is half technical execution and half theme-level engineering. Most agencies that 'do Shopify SEO' are actually running generic ecommerce playbooks against the platform and missing the platform-native opportunities (metafields, collection-template specialization, app-bloat audits, Liquid-injected schema).
Technical SEO challenges unique to Shopify
The platform-specific issues that determine whether Shopify SEO compounds or stalls.
Duplicate content on /products/ canonical chains
Shopify exposes the same product at /products/{handle} AND at /collections/{collection}/products/{handle} — and historically only canonicalized one direction. Theme-level canonical injection is required to control this; default Dawn theme handles it correctly, most legacy Debut/Brooklyn themes do not.
Collection pagination + faceted-filter sprawl
Filtering by colour/size/price on a collection generates `?filter.v.*` URLs that Google can crawl and index by default. We block these via robots.txt directives (or x-robots headers on Plus) and consolidate authority on the canonical collection URL.
App bloat and Core Web Vitals collapse
The median Canadian Shopify store ships with 14 third-party apps, each injecting JS into the head. We've measured LCP regressions of 2.4s+ from a single review-app embed. Audit + remove + lazy-defer the rest.
Sitemap fragmentation on non-Plus plans
You can't edit /sitemap.xml on non-Plus plans. The platform-generated sitemap includes drafts, hidden products, and sometimes collections you've intentionally noindex'd — we work around this with theme-level robots/canonical control, then validate via Search Console URL inspection at scale.
Image SEO via CDN URL transformations
Shopify CDN supports `?width=` parameter transforms, but the image_tag filter doesn't always emit srcset attributes correctly on older themes. Modern responsive image markup must be theme-injected; this is one of the highest-ROI Shopify Core Web Vitals wins.
Metafields → JSON-LD pipeline
Metafields are Shopify's native answer to structured data. The merchants outranking competitors in 2026 aren't using a schema app — they're populating product/collection metafields and emitting them as JSON-LD via Liquid in theme.liquid. This is the cleanest, fastest, and most maintainable approach.

Shopify SEO pricing in Canada
Most Canadian Shopify SEO engagements we run are in the C$3,500–C$9,500 CAD/month range for established stores with C$50k–C$1M+ MRR. The variance is mostly app-audit/theme-engineering depth in the first 90 days. Shopify Plus engagements with international subdomains, B2B portals, and headless storefronts (Hydrogen) typically start at C$12,000 CAD/month.
Migration considerations
Migrating TO Shopify from WooCommerce, Magento, or BigCommerce: budget 60-90 days for a clean SEO migration. The platform has matured significantly since 2022 — Shopify Plus + Hydrogen now handles most enterprise migration scenarios cleanly. Migrating AWAY from Shopify (typically to BigCommerce or headless commerce) is usually a category-page-traffic decision: Shopify's collection-page SEO ceiling is real and merchants north of C$50M in revenue often hit it.
