What Is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the discipline of getting your content selected as the answer when a user asks a question of an answer engine — Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, Bing Copilot, Alexa, Siri, or any system that returns a synthesized response instead of a ranked list of links. AEO is not separate from SEO; it is what SEO is becoming as more search experiences shift from 'show me ten blue links' to 'tell me the answer and cite your sources.' This guide explains what AEO actually is, how it differs from traditional SEO, the practical changes it requires to your content and structure, and how to measure whether it is working.

TL;DR

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of optimizing content to be selected as the answer by systems that return synthesized responses instead of a list of links — Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, Bing Copilot, voice assistants, and zero-click featured snippets. AEO overlaps with classic SEO but adds three priorities: directly answerable structure, machine-extractable formatting, and citation-worthy expertise signals.

This guide explains what AEO actually is, how it differs from traditional SEO, the practical changes it requires to your content and structure, and how to measure whether it is working.

Where the term comes from

The phrase 'answer engine optimization' has been used in the SEO industry since at least 2017, originally referring to optimization for voice assistants and featured snippets. It re-emerged in 2023–2024 as the broader category covering AI Overviews and generative search experiences.

There is no single governing body that defines AEO; the working definition is 'optimization for any system that returns a synthesized answer with citations.' That covers Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT with web browsing, Perplexity, Claude with web search, Gemini, Bing Copilot, and voice assistants.

How AEO differs from classic SEO

Classic SEO optimizes for a click. AEO optimizes for a citation. The difference matters because the systems that compose answers prioritize extractability and source credibility over pure keyword relevance.

  • Classic SEO targets keywords; AEO targets questions and entities.
  • Classic SEO rewards comprehensive long-form; AEO rewards a clean direct answer plus comprehensive supporting depth.
  • Classic SEO is measured in rankings and clicks; AEO is measured in citations, impressions in AI surfaces, and assisted conversions.
  • Classic SEO can rank thin, optimized content; AEO requires demonstrable expertise because answer engines cite sources they trust to be correct.

The AEO content structure

Every AEO-optimized page has the same skeleton: question-shaped H1, 40–60 word direct answer immediately below, expanded sections with question-shaped H2s, list and table blocks where appropriate, FAQ block at the bottom that mirrors real People Also Ask queries.

The direct answer block is the single most important element. It should be self-contained — a reader (or model) extracting just that paragraph should get a complete, accurate answer without needing context from anywhere else on the page.

The schema stack for AEO

Three schemas do most of the AEO work: FAQPage (mirroring your visible FAQs), Article with named author and reviewedBy (signalling expertise), and SpeakableSpecification (targeting the direct answer block). For products and services, add Service or Product schema. For local businesses, LocalBusiness with full NAP.

Schema does not directly cause citations, but it gives answer engines a structured representation of the page they would otherwise have to infer. Pages with clean schema get cited at meaningfully higher rates in our tracking, particularly in AI Overviews and in Perplexity.

Expertise signals that earn citations

Answer engines treat citation as endorsement. They are reluctant to cite anonymous content because they bear reputational risk if the answer turns out to be wrong. Pages with named authors who have public credentials, dated last-reviewed timestamps, references to primary sources, and corrections policies get cited at materially higher rates.

The cheapest high-leverage AEO change for most sites is to add a real author byline with a real bio page, a 'last reviewed' date that is honestly maintained, and a public 'how we research and update content' page.

How to measure AEO

AEO measurement is harder than classic SEO measurement because most answer engines do not yet expose citation data the way Google Search Console exposes clicks and impressions. The current best stack is: Search Console AI Overview filter (Google), manual sampling of ChatGPT/Claude/Perplexity citations on your priority queries (run them weekly and log which sources got cited), and assisted-conversion tracking in GA4 (referrals from chat.openai.com, perplexity.ai, claude.ai, gemini.google.com).

Build a weekly citation tracker for your top 25 priority queries. Run each query in each major answer engine, log whether you were cited, and which competitors were. Patterns emerge in weeks, not months.

Key takeaways

AEO is optimization for systems that return a synthesized answer with citations, not a ranked list of links.
AEO and SEO overlap heavily but AEO adds priorities for extractability, schema, and named expertise.
Lead every page with a 40–60 word direct answer block under the H1.
FAQPage + Article (with named author/reviewer) + SpeakableSpecification is the core AEO schema stack.
Measure AEO via Search Console AI Overview filter and weekly manual citation sampling on priority queries.
