RFC 9110

414 URI Too Long

The URI provided was too long for the server to process.

What it means

HTTP 414 URI Too Long indicates the URI requested by the client is longer than the server is willing to interpret. Often caused by overlong query strings or buggy clients sending POST data as GET.

When it's used

Extremely long query strings, infinite redirect loops accumulating query params, or attacks attempting to overflow URL parsers.

Common causes
  • Query string with hundreds of params
  • Infinite redirect appending tracking params
  • Form mistakenly using GET instead of POST
  • Buffer overflow attempt
How to fix it
  • Convert GET to POST when sending large data
  • Trim unnecessary query parameters
  • Detect and break redirect loops
  • Increase server URL buffer size if legitimate (Nginx large_client_header_buffers)
Example response
HTTP/1.1 414 URI Too Long
Connection: close
SEO impact

Pages with overlong URLs may be skipped by crawlers. Keep URLs under 2000 characters.
