4xx Client Error
RFC 9110
413 Payload Too Large
The request body is larger than the server is willing or able to process.
What it means
HTTP 413 Payload Too Large (formerly Request Entity Too Large) indicates the server is refusing to process a request because the request payload is too large. The server may include a Retry-After header.
When it's used
File uploads exceeding limits, oversized JSON bodies, batch imports beyond capacity.
Common causes
- File upload exceeds Nginx client_max_body_size
- JSON body larger than Express bodyParser limit
- Image upload to S3 exceeding signed-URL limit
How to fix it
- Increase server-side body limits (nginx client_max_body_size, Express limit option)
- Implement chunked uploads for large files
- Compress request bodies with gzip
- Use a presigned URL flow for direct-to-storage uploads
Example response
HTTP/1.1 413 Payload Too Large
