2xx Success
RFC 9110
204 No Content
The server successfully processed the request but is not returning any content.
What it means
HTTP 204 No Content indicates a successful request where the server has no content to send back. Common after PUT or DELETE operations, or when an action succeeds but returns nothing.
When it's used
Successful DELETE requests, PUT requests where the response body would be empty, or bookmarklet-style endpoints.
Common causes
- DELETE request succeeded
- Form submission accepted with no redirect needed
- Tracking pixel or analytics beacon acknowledged
How to fix it
- Not an error — success without payload
- Do not include a body — it must be empty per spec
- Use 200 + body if you want to return the updated resource
Example response
HTTP/1.1 204 No Content
SEO impact
Should never be used for HTML pages a user navigates to. Acceptable for AJAX endpoints.
