Content Freshness Signal
Content freshness is one of Google's ranking inputs — for queries where users expect recent information ('best laptop 2026', 'current Toronto weather'), recently published or updated content gets a boost.
In context
Freshness signal is strongest for queries with explicit recency expectations and for query categories Google classifies as 'Query Deserves Freshness' (news, trending events, annual best-of). For evergreen topics, freshness matters less; depth and authority dominate. Update strategy: refresh top-traffic pages quarterly, update the date metadata visibly when meaningful improvements ship (not just for the sake of changing the date), and document the actual changes in a 'last updated' note.
A Toronto agency's 'best CRMs for Canadian B2B 2025' article was refreshed in January 2026 — added new vendors, removed discontinued ones, updated pricing — and reranked from position 8 to 3 within 60 days.
