Google AI Overviews in 2026: the SERP shift

Google AI Overviews launched in May 2024 and reached approximately stable trigger rates by mid-2025: very high on informational, comparison, and how-to queries; meaningful on local-research and commercial-investigation queries; low on pure transactional queries. The 2026 picture is one of stabilization rather than expansion — Google has explicitly suppressed AI Overviews for many YMYL topics and for queries with clear transactional intent, and the trigger rates above are unlikely to grow much further.

The strategic question is no longer "will AI Overviews show up for my queries?" — it's "for the queries where AI Overviews show up, am I cited or not, and what does that do to my traffic and authority?" The answer to the first part is binary and trackable; the answer to the second part requires real measurement.

The cited-in-Overview brand and the not-cited-in-Overview brand are now playing fundamentally different SEO games on the same query. The cited brand wins authority signals plus modest CTR; the uncited brand loses CTR with no offsetting authority gain.

How AI Overviews select sources

AI Overviews source predominantly from Google's top-10 organic results for the underlying query. Across the AI Overview citations we've tracked for Canadian clients, the patterns are consistent:

  • The overwhelming majority of AI Overview citations come from pages ranking top-10 in regular Google for the query
Top-10 ranking is effectively a prerequisite for AI Overview citation eligibility. The corollary: ranking outside top-10 means very few AI Overview citations regardless of content quality.
  • Within top-10, citation favours pages with answer-format content near the top
Pages with a 40–80 word concise answer summary in the first 200 words get cited at materially higher rates than pages where the answer is buried below introductions.
  • Lists and tables are extracted with strong preference
List and table content gets pulled into AI Overviews more often than equivalent prose. Marked-up lists (HTML <ol>/<ul>, ItemList schema) extract more cleanly than visual-only formatting.
  • FAQPage schema correlates strongly with citation rate
Pages with FAQPage schema on FAQ-style content get cited at higher rates on FAQ-resembling queries. Schema is a real signal here.
  • Recency matters less than for Perplexity/ChatGPT
AI Overviews source from Google's index, which heavily weights authority + relevance over recency. Stale evergreen content with strong rankings still gets cited; fresh content from low-authority sites does not.

What AI Overviews actually do to CTR

The 2024-era panic about CTR collapse was partially right and partially wrong. Two years of measurement give a more nuanced picture:

Position scenarioDirectional CTR change vs pre-AIO baselineNet traffic impact
Top-10 + cited in AI OverviewMildly negativeRoughly flat (citation drives some clicks back)
Top-10 + NOT cited in AI OverviewMaterially negativeClearly negative
Top-3 + cited in AI Overview (high-visibility)Slightly negativeSlightly negative; brand authority lift offsets
Position 11–20 (no AIO interaction)Roughly stableStable
Featured snippet pre-AIO, now cited in AIO insteadSlightly negativeRoughly stable; slot transition

The strategic implication is sharp: on queries where AI Overviews trigger, being cited in the Overview is materially better than being top-10-uncited. The work to earn citations is the work to mitigate CTR loss.

Tactics that earn AI Overview citations

Top-10 Google ranking on the underlying query

Foundational. AI Overview citations almost exclusively come from top-10 organic results. Classical Google SEO is the prerequisite, not a parallel track.

Answer-summary structure at the top of priority pages

40–80 word concise answer in the first 200 words, with the depth content below. Highest-ROI page-level restructure for AI Overview citation lift.

FAQPage schema on FAQ-style content

Single biggest schema signal for AI Overview citation lift on FAQ-resembling queries. Cheap, well-tooled, deploy everywhere applicable.

Marked-up lists and tables for comparison content

Use semantic HTML (<ol>/<ul>/<table>) plus ItemList/Table schema where applicable. Visual-only formatting (bulleted divs) extracts less cleanly.

HowTo schema on instructional content

Where applicable, HowTo schema reinforces step-by-step extraction. Use sparingly — Google has tightened HowTo schema eligibility requirements since 2024.

Author + Organization schema for E-E-A-T signals

Article schema with author Person schema with worksFor Organization. AI Overviews favour authored content with verifiable expertise signals.

Which queries trigger AI Overviews and which don't

Query typeAIO trigger frequency (en-CA)AIO trigger frequency (fr-CA)Strategic priority
Informational ('what is X')Very highHighHigh — earn citation
Comparison ('X vs Y')Very highHighHigh — earn citation
How-to ('how to do X')Very highHighHigh — earn citation
Local research ('best X near Toronto')ModerateLower-moderateMedium — earn citation, optimize GBP
Commercial investigation ('best X for Y use case')ModerateLower-moderateMedium — earn citation
Pure transactional ('buy X', 'X price')LowLowLow — focus on classical SERP
YMYL (medical, legal, financial)Suppressed / variableSuppressed / variableVariable — tread carefully
Local map-pack queriesLow-moderateLowLow — focus on map pack

Strategic implication: prioritize AI Overview citation work on the high-trigger query categories (informational, comparison, how-to). Don't over-invest in transactional or map-pack-dominant queries where AIOs trigger rarely.

Monitoring AI Overview visibility

Three layers of monitoring matter:

  • Search Console AI Overview impressions
Google Search Console reports AI Overview impressions separately for many queries. Foundational; check this first.
  • Programmatic citation tracking
Otterly.ai or Profound supports AI Overview citation tracking on a defined query universe. Tracks citation appearance, citation position, and competitor citation share.
  • Rank-tracker AI Overview detection
Semrush, Ahrefs, AccuRanker all support AI Overview detection in 2026. Use whichever is in your existing stack rather than adding tooling.

What an AI Overviews SEO engagement looks like

AI Overviews work is mostly bundled into broader Google SEO retainers — the work is convergent with classical SEO and most engagements include it implicitly. Where it shows up as discrete scope:

  • Restructure project (one-time, C$3,500–C$8,500 CAD)
Restructure 30–60 highest-priority pages with answer-summary patterns at the top, marked-up lists/tables, FAQPage schema where applicable. Typically 30–60 day project.
  • Measurement + reporting layer (ongoing, C$800–C$1,800 CAD/month)
AI Overview-specific tracking + reporting beyond what's included in standard SEO retainers.
  • Embedded in retainer (no separate line item)
AI Overview optimization tactics applied to all new content + ongoing site updates as standard practice. Most engagements include this without separate pricing.
