Internal Linking: The Most Underused SEO Lever

Internal linking is the most underused lever in SEO. Most sites publish pages and never go back to systematically link them together. Yet a focused internal-linking pass on a 100-page site frequently moves rankings within weeks, with zero new content and zero new backlinks. This guide explains the strategy and the patterns.

TL;DR

Internal linking is how you tell Google which of your pages are most important and how they relate to each other. A great internal-linking strategy concentrates authority on money pages, builds topical clusters, uses descriptive anchor text, and keeps important pages within a few clicks of the homepage. It's the highest-leverage on-page move most sites neglect.

Internal linking is the most underused lever in SEO. Most sites publish pages and never go back to systematically link them together. Yet a focused internal-linking pass on a 100-page site frequently moves rankings within weeks, with zero new content and zero new backlinks. This guide explains the strategy and the patterns.

Why internal links matter so much

Internal links do three things: they help Google discover and crawl pages, they pass PageRank (link equity) from authoritative pages to less authoritative ones, and they signal topical relevance through anchor text and surrounding content.

Unlike backlinks, you control internal links 100%. A focused internal-linking strategy is the highest-leverage SEO work you're not doing.

The hub-and-spoke (cluster) model

The dominant model for internal linking is the topic cluster: one comprehensive pillar page on a broad topic, surrounded by many specific cluster pages on subtopics. The pillar links to every cluster, every cluster links back to the pillar, and clusters link laterally to closely related clusters.

This pattern signals topical authority to Google, concentrates link equity on the pillar, and gives users a coherent path through related content. Most modern site architectures should use cluster patterns instead of isolated, hub-less articles.

Anchor text strategy

Anchor text — the visible clickable text of a link — is one of the strongest topical relevance signals. Use descriptive, keyword-relevant anchor text that tells both Google and the reader what's on the other side. "Click here" anchors waste the signal entirely.

Vary the anchor text naturally across links to the same destination. Forcing the exact same anchor on every internal link to a target page can look manipulative; varying naturally between exact-match, partial-match, and synonyms looks editorial.

Crawl depth: keep important pages close to home

Crawl depth is the number of clicks from the homepage to a given page. Pages more than 3–4 clicks deep get crawled less often, ranked lower, and indexed less reliably. For money pages, services, and high-priority content, target a crawl depth of 1–3.

Audit crawl depth with Screaming Frog or similar. Pages buried 5+ clicks deep often have major SEO upside from being surfaced in navigation, hub pages, or related-content sections.

Orphan pages: invisible to Google

An orphan page is a URL with no internal links pointing to it. Google can sometimes still crawl orphans (via sitemaps or external links) but typically ranks them poorly and may not index them. Audit orphans with Screaming Frog by comparing the crawl frontier to the sitemap; every orphan is either a candidate for de-indexing or for new internal links.

Internal linking workflow

Every time you publish a new page, do three things: link to it from at least 2 existing topically related pages, link from it to your most important related pillar/money page, and add it to the relevant hub or category page. Without that workflow, even great new content sits orphaned and underperforms.

On established sites, run quarterly internal-link audits: find pages with strong rankings on impressions but no internal-link support, and add 3–5 internal links from related authoritative pages. The lift is often immediate and dramatic.

Key takeaways

Internal links are the highest-leverage SEO lever you control 100%.
Use the hub-and-spoke (topic cluster) model: pillar + clusters + cross-links.
Use descriptive, keyword-relevant anchor text — never "click here."
Keep important pages within 3 clicks of the homepage.
Audit and eliminate orphan pages quarterly.
