308 Permanent Redirect

Quick Definition

A 308 status code is a permanent HTTP redirect that preserves the original request method, the modern method-preserving alternative to 301.

In context

308 is treated by Google the same as 301 for SEO purposes — ranking signals consolidate at the destination URL. The technical advantage over 301 is method preservation (POST stays POST), which matters mostly for APIs. For most front-end content moves a 301 is the conventional choice; 308 is appropriate for API URLs being permanently relocated.

Example

A Canadian SaaS migrating its REST API from /v1/ to /v2/ uses 308 for endpoints with POST payloads to ensure clients automatically follow the redirect with their original request body intact.
