4xx Client Error
RFC 9110
410 Gone
The resource is no longer available and will not be available again.
What it means
HTTP 410 Gone indicates that the resource has been intentionally removed and will not return. Unlike 404, which is non-committal, 410 is a permanent statement that the URL is dead forever.
When it's used
Permanently deleted content, retired products, removed user accounts.
Common causes
- Product permanently discontinued
- User deleted their account and content
- Article retracted by editorial decision
- Old promotional landing page intentionally killed
How to fix it
- Correct usage if the content is truly gone forever
- Use 301 redirect if the content was replaced
- Submit removal in Google Search Console for faster deindexing
- Update internal links to remove references
Example response
HTTP/1.1 410 Gone Content-Type: text/html
SEO impact
Faster deindexing than 404. Use 410 when you want Google to drop the URL from the index immediately.
