Conversational Query

Quick Definition

A conversational query is a natural-language, often multi-sentence search input — typical of ChatGPT, Perplexity, voice assistants, and Google's lens-and-prompt surfaces.

In context

Conversational queries are longer, more context-rich, and often multi-turn ('I'm a small clinic in Toronto looking for an SEO agency, what should I look for?' rather than 'best Toronto SEO'). Optimising: cover the longer-tail conversational variants of your category in FAQ-style content, use natural language headings, and write in a tone that mirrors how a user would phrase the question. Conversational queries tend to surface citations from sources that match the user's framing rather than the user's keywords.

Example

A Canadian medical-spa site rewrote its 'Botox cost Toronto' page to also answer 'How much should I expect to spend on Botox in Toronto and what affects the price?' — ChatGPT citation rate for the conversational variant tripled.
