Contrast Ratio

Quick Definition

Contrast ratio measures the difference in luminance between text and background, expressed as a ratio (e.g., 4.5:1).

In context

WCAG AA accessibility requires 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text. AAA standards are 7:1 and 4.5:1. Low contrast is a top accessibility violation and hurts older users particularly.
