Brotli Compression
Brotli is a compression algorithm developed by Google that produces smaller files than gzip — typically 15–25% smaller for HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
In context
Brotli is supported in all modern browsers and most CDNs (Cloudflare, Fastly, Akamai, AWS CloudFront). Enabling Brotli at the CDN edge is one of the lowest-effort, highest-leverage performance changes available — smaller files load faster, which improves LCP and reduces bandwidth costs. Static assets should be precompressed at maximum quality (Brotli level 11); dynamic HTML uses lower levels (4–6) to balance compression ratio against CPU.
A Canadian publisher enabled Brotli on Cloudflare and saw HTML payload sizes drop ~22% versus gzip — a measurable LCP improvement on slower mobile connections.
