HTTPS vs HTTP: do you really need to migrate?

Updated April 19, 2026

HTTPS encrypts data between the browser and your server. HTTP doesn't. Google made HTTPS a confirmed ranking factor in 2014, and Chrome now actively flags HTTP sites as 'Not Secure' in the address bar. SSL certificates are free via Let's Encrypt — there's no reason any site should still be on HTTP in 2026.

The Verdict

HTTPS is mandatory. There is no scenario where running HTTP in 2026 makes business sense. The browser warnings alone destroy conversion.

Side-by-side breakdown

DimensionHTTPSHTTP
Browser treatmentPadlock, normal display'Not Secure' warning, scares users
Ranking factorConfirmed positiveConfirmed disadvantage
SSL costFree (Let's Encrypt) or C$50–C$200/yr (paid)C$0 but unusable
Modern web featuresFull access (geolocation, service workers, etc.)Blocked
HTTP/2 and HTTP/3Available (significant speed gain)HTTP/1.1 only
Setup complexityTrivial on modern hostingN/A (default)

Who should choose what

Choose HTTPS if…

Every site. Period.

Choose HTTP if…

No legitimate site. HTTP-only operation in 2026 means broken trust signals and lost conversion.
