Practice Manager, multi-physician medical clinic in southern Ontario (~6 physicians, 2 nurse practitioners)

An Ontario family medical clinic wanted to attract patients moving into the area and to be cited correctly when prospective patients used ChatGPT or Google AI Overviews to research conditions. We ran an 11-month YMYL-compliant program covering medically-reviewed content, per-physician E-E-A-T signals, and GBP optimization for both clinic locations.

Editorial note: Anonymized per our editorial policy. No fabricated client names or quotes. All metrics are directional and qualified with attribution; client-reported figures are labelled.

The challenge

The clinic had built a basic website three years prior with no medical-content strategy. New patients were arriving primarily from physician referrals and word-of-mouth; organic-search-sourced new-patient bookings were estimated at 1–2 per month. The website had no condition-specific content, no per-physician profiles with credentials, and a single 'Contact' page with no schema. Google AI Overviews on common conditions (diabetes management, anxiety, hypertension) cited US sources almost exclusively — no Ontario-specific information.

Approach

  1. 1
Established a YMYL-compliant editorial workflow: every health article reviewed and signed off by a named physician on staff, with the physician's CPSO (College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario) registry link, full credentials, and dedicated /team/{physician} page emitting Person + Physician schema.
  2. 2
Built per-physician profile pages for each of the 6 physicians and 2 nurse practitioners, with full education / training / hospital affiliations / sameAs to CPSO registry, plus genuine clinical interests written by the physicians themselves.
  3. 3
Published 18 condition-specific articles over 11 months covering common Ontario primary-care concerns (diabetes management in Ontario, OHIP-covered mental health resources, hypertension monitoring, perimenopause care, ADHD assessment in adults) — each medically reviewed, with citations to Health Canada, OHIP, and peer-reviewed sources.
  4. 4
Set up two GBP profiles (one per clinic location) with complete service menus, accepting-new-patients status, and all 8 practitioners listed where applicable.
  5. 5
Established monthly AI engine citation tracking on 30 condition-specific Ontario queries across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews.

Outcomes

approx. 1–2/mo → 14–18/mo
Estimated organic-sourced new-patient bookings (M11 vs M0)
client EMR + intake form 'how did you find us'
12 of 18
Condition articles ranking page-1 for primary Ontario-modified query
as of month 11
0% baseline → estimated 25–35% citation rate across tested queries
AI engine citation rate (Ontario condition queries)
monthly probe across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AIO
0/8 → 8/8 physicians and NPs
Physician CPSO registry link + Person schema coverage
complete E-E-A-T schema across the team

Reflection

The healthcare YMYL program is the case where editorial discipline matters most — every claim must be defensible, every author must be credentialed, every external citation must be authoritative. The trade-off is publishing speed: 18 articles in 11 months is a quarter of the pace a non-YMYL site can hit. The compounding return is durable trust signal that makes the clinic the natural local citation in AI engine answers about Ontario primary care.
