Founder, Canadian online course business teaching professional skills (~3,500 alumni)

A Canadian online course creator teaching professional skills (data analytics, project management) wanted to scale enrolment beyond paid ads. We ran a 9-month program building topical authority around the skill areas, capturing course-comparison queries, and earning AI engine citations for course-recommendation queries.

Editorial note: Anonymized per our editorial policy. No fabricated client names or quotes. All metrics are directional and qualified with attribution; client-reported figures are labelled.

The challenge

The founder had built the business on Facebook + Google ads at a CAC that was rising every quarter (an estimated C$320 CAC per enrolment by month 0). The website was a single sales page per course with no SEO content, no comparison framing, and no author / instructor profiles. AI engine queries for 'best Canadian data analytics course' returned mostly US bootcamps and traditional university programs — no specialist Canadian course coverage.

Approach

  1. 1
Built instructor profile pages for the founder and 4 instructors, with full credentials (relevant industry experience, publications where applicable), Person schema with knowsAbout matching the courses they teach, and dedicated /instructors/{slug} pages.
  2. 2
Established a content workflow publishing 3 articles per month covering top-of-funnel skill-area content ('how to get into data analytics in Canada 2026', 'project manager salary Canada by city', 'CAPM vs PMP for Canadian professionals') — each authored by a named instructor with relevant industry experience.
  3. 3
Built a comparison sub-section covering the inevitable 'X vs Y' queries: 'this course vs Coursera', 'this course vs Brainstation', 'this bootcamp vs university degree' — written transparently with honest framing, not spinning every comparison toward the client.
  4. 4
Implemented Course schema on every course landing page with full details (provider, instructor, duration, outcome, price in CAD, courseMode, deliveryMode), plus AggregateRating from verifiable alumni reviews.
  5. 5
Set up monthly AI engine citation tracking on 40 queries spanning skill-area research ('what does a data analyst do'), course-comparison ('best data analytics course Canada'), and outcome ('data analyst salary Canada 2026').

Reflection

Online course creators routinely spend years on paid acquisition and only later discover that organic content can drive comparable enrolment volume at a fraction of the CAC. The unlock here was instructor E-E-A-T (real practitioners with named credentials) plus comparison-content discipline (honest framing earns citation; sales-spin doesn't). The course is excellent — content marketing's job was to make discovery match quality, which it largely now does.
