Founder + lead advisor, fee-only Canadian financial planning firm (~C$80M AUM)
A fee-only Canadian financial planning firm wanted to be the default Canadian source cited when prospects researched TFSA, RRSP, RESP, and retirement-planning questions in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google. We ran a 14-month thought-leadership content program covering Canadian-tax-specific topics, with rigorous editorial discipline and per-advisor E-E-A-T build-out.
Service & engagement
The challenge
The firm had a strong existing client base (~140 households) but was hitting a referral ceiling. Founder wanted to expand by being discoverable to Canadian residents researching financial topics on AI engines and Google. The existing site had a generic 'Services' page, no content beyond a stale blog with 4 posts, and no advisor profile pages. AI engine queries about Canadian-specific financial topics returned mostly US sources or generic Canadian banks — no specialist fee-only advisor presence.
Approach
- 1Built advisor profile pages for the founder and three associate advisors, each with full credentials (CFP, CIM, CFA where applicable), CSA (Canadian Securities Administrators) registration links, education, fee-only positioning, and dedicated Person schema.
- 2Established a thought-leadership editorial workflow: 2 articles per month covering Canadian-specific financial topics (TFSA contribution room rules 2026, RRSP vs TFSA priority for high earners, RESP withdrawal timing for university, principal residence exemption nuance, OAS clawback at high incomes), each authored or co-authored by a named advisor.
- 3Published 28 deep articles over 14 months, ranging 2,500–4,500 words, with calculator embeds, scenario tables, and citations to CRA, OSFI, and primary-source government materials.
- 4Set up monthly AI engine citation tracking across 50 Canadian-specific financial queries on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews.
- 5Built a tools sub-section with 6 free Canadian-specific calculators (RRSP room, TFSA room, OAS clawback, RESP grant, marginal tax 2026, retirement gap) — each calculator earning links from personal-finance forums and reposts.
Outcomes
Reflection
Canadian financial-planning content is a category with massive AI-engine demand and almost no specialist coverage — most articles ranking for 'TFSA vs RRSP' are bank marketing pieces or US-centric content. A fee-only advisor with editorial discipline and the willingness to publish 2 deep articles per month for 14 months can plausibly become the default Canadian source. The lever is editorial commitment plus advisor E-E-A-T schema — not link-building tactics.
